Data assessment is performed to determine the usability of laboratory-generated data. The data validation and data evaluation processes determine the usability of the reported laboratory results. For both data validation and data evaluation, quality control sample results are compared with established acceptance criteria. The acceptance criteria can be agency, method, laboratory, or project-specific. Qualifiers are applied to the reported sample results based on the findings of the validation or evaluation process. Data validation differs from data evaluation in that for the data validation process, the reported data are also verified against available documentation (“raw” data) provided by the laboratory.
Whether the data receive a validation or an evaluation, professional judgment is applied as necessary and appropriate. Emphasis is placed on technical usability of the data as opposed to method compliance. Data that are method compliant may not be usable and, conversely, data that are usable may not be method compliant.
